According to legend, a virgin of noble blood; protested against persecution of Christians by Maxentius (thus in early MSS; probably Maximinus); condemned to torture on a spiked wheel (hence the name Catherine wheel); beheaded. According to legend her body was discovered on Mount Sinai ca. 800. Removed from RC calendar 1969. See also Church Year, 17.
