(January 28, 1826–August 2, 1909). Grandson of J. G. Butler* (b. 1754); b. Cumberland, Maryland educ. Alleghany Coll., Cumberland, Maryland, and Pennsylvania Coll. and Theol. Sem. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; pastor St. Paul Eng. Luth. Ch. 1849–73 and Luther Place Memorial Ch. 1873–1909, both in Washington, D. C.; chaplain 5th regt. Pennsylvania Volunteers, in Civil War; appointed hosp. chaplain by A. Lincoln; chaplain US House of Representatives and Senate
