Balfour, Arthur James

(1848–1930). Brit. statesman and philos. Originator of Balfour Declaration (see Middle East, F). Wrote apologies for religious faith in which he held that all knowledge, including scientific, requires axioms which require religious faith. Works include A Defence of Philosophic Doubt; The Foundations of Unbelief; Theism and Humanism; Theism and Thought. See also Metaphysical Society, The; Zionism
