The name azymitai, “users of unleavened bread,” was given by the Gk. Ch. to the Lat. Ch. from the 11th c., because the latter used unleavened bread in the Lord's Supper, whereas the Gk. Orthodox Ch. insists on leavened bread. The W Ch. maintained it was immaterial which kind of bread was used. The Council of Florence decided 1439 that each ch. was to follow its own custom.
