Called by Constantine; first syn. of W; in its 22 canons Donatism is condemned, the desire is expressed for a uniform date for Easter, and heretical baptism is declared valid if performed in the name of the Trinity. The canons are esp. significant because of light they shed on ch.-state relations in this formative and critical period.
