Anabaptists

(from Gk. for “rebaptize”). Term of reproach applied to those who insist on rebaptism of those who were baptized as infants or by heretics or by clergy who lapsed from faith under persecution. The term was first used in the 4th century. 16th-c. centers include Zurich, Switz.; Zwickau and Wittenberg, Saxony; Moravia; NW Ger. and the Low Countries; Münster, Westphalia; Rhineland and SW Ger.
