Agobard of Lyons

(ca. 769/779–840). B. Sp.; abp. Lyons 816; opposed Louis* I and approved his deposition 833. Agobard was deposed 835 because he opposed schemes of the empress; reinstated 837/838. Works include writings against adoptionism,* liturgical speculations of Amalarius* of Metz, verbal inspiration, image worship, belief in witchcraft* and magic,* and trial by ordeal.
