Azariah, Vedanayakam Samuel

(1874–1945). First Indian bp. of Angl. Ch.; educ. Madras Christian Coll.; active in miss. societies of India and formation of the Ch. of S India. Emphasized importance of Gospel preaching, need for well-trained ministry, and evangelism by every Christian; opposed caste system.

Azymite Controversy.

The name azymitai, “users of unleavened bread,” was given by the Gk. Ch. to the Lat. Ch. from the 11th c., because the latter used unleavened bread in the Lord's Supper, whereas the Gk. Orthodox Ch. insists on leavened bread. The W Ch. maintained it was immaterial which kind of bread was used. The Council of Florence decided 1439 that each ch. was to follow its own custom.
